Stats to Stories
Written by Jedi Alexis Cadeliña
Nobody wants to be reduced
To a number.
“Quality over quantity,” we cry.
We cry
Over the coldness
The “inhumane” calculations that boil everything down to digits.
But from statistics we can begin to put the puzzle together
Each piece a fiber we can weave into tapestries
And it’s up to us–
As the children of a sometimes confusing, often exciting union
Of the social sciences and the liberal arts–
To infuse each number with warmth and life and color.
It is our right,
Our joy,
And our responsibility
To ensure that each number is a word in a sentence
A sentence in a paragraph
A paragraph on a page
A page in the book
Of the beauty we gather
From communication in, among, and outside of organizations.
From stats to stories
The narratives can arise.
It is our privilege,
Our pride,
And our prerogative
To ensure that these stories are told right
Each research a source
For honorable and excellent storytelling:
The lifeblood of communication.
