OrComSoc navigates the Metropolis in its 39th Anniversary

Written by Kristel Posadas

The Organizational Communication Society (OrComSoc) steadfastly promotes unity, camaraderie, and leadership as it marks a triumphant conclusion to another OrCom Week under the theme, “Metropolis: Pioneering New Avenues of Communication.” With much enthusiasm and anticipation, OrComSoc celebrated its 39th year from October 2 to October 7, embracing the return to face-to-face events as we further take significant steps forward in our collective recovery from the pandemic.

1st station: Buddy System: Urban Diaries

For the first time since the pandemic, the Buddy System commenced face-to-face in the SSWC to kick off OrCom Week! Under the theme, “Urban Diaries: Who’s Your Slam Book Buddy?”, 40 freshmen and 40 upperclassmen came together to forge meaningful connections. In the event, the freshmen selected their buddies who will serve as their support system throughout their college experience. Additionally, numerous lucky pairs secured fantastic prizes, courtesy of one of the event’s partners, Kalsado.

2nd station: OrCom Bingo

Transitioning to an offline event, OrComSoc members embarked on a unique challenge of Bingo—with a twist! The Bingo cards were packed with enjoyable activities designed to immerse participants in the exciting OrComSoc experience. The top ten members who promptly submitted their completed cards were rewarded with fantastic prizes graciously sponsored by the event’s partners.

3rd station: OrComlympics

In a spirited display of camaraderie and competition, representatives from each batch of OrCom majors went head-to-head in a fierce battle for this year’s trophy. The 2023 OrComlympics showcased a series of exhilarating games, including multi-legged race, tic-tac-shoot, finish the puzzle, and catch the dragon tail. After a series of gripping matches, the sophomore class emerged victorious as they seized the champion title for the second time in a row.

4th station: Eto Kami Ngayon

‘Eto Kami Ngayon’ (EKN) is an annual series of inspirational talks by accomplished alumni as they shed light on how the OrCom program has been a driving force behind their professional journeys. In this year’s installment of EKN, Ms. Louise Sabariaga revealed her instrumental role in establishing the marketing department within her organization. Following her, Atty. Arvin Kristopher Razon shared his remarkable journey, crediting the skills and knowledge acquired during his time in OrCom as pivotal to his flourishing career as a lawyer. Concluding the event, we had the privilege of delving deeper into the realm of business development with Ms. Marie Odette Ong. She shared valuable insights on how she advanced her career, ultimately achieving harmony between her passion and profession. We learned that the integration of both is not only achievable, but also enriching.

5th station: Acquaintance Party

In a long-awaited gathering, OrCom majors met in person for the first time since the pandemic for the much-anticipated annual Acquaintance Party, held right in the City of OrComville. Even a postponement due to a Yellow Rainfall Warning couldn’t dampen the spirits of the OrCom community, who came together on the evening of October 7th for a night filled with fun and camaraderie. Adding to the excitement, special guest performer Jed Baruelo took center stage and captivated the City of Orcomville with a sensational live performance. The night drew to a close with fond memories of newfound friends and cherished company.

6th station: OrCom Writes

The curtains draw to a close with OrCom week’s final event, ‘OrCom Writes’. This event provided an exceptional opportunity for OrCom majors to display their writing prowess and storytelling skills. Participants were asked with a thought-provoking prompt: “In your life, what is a road you decided not to walk on, and where do you think that road leads to?” Entries took the form of both prose and poetry, with the top five submissions earning a spot in the literary section of the OrCom blog for the month of October.

OrCom Week unfolded as a blend of learning and enjoyment as it highlighted the values of camaraderie and unity, all while showcasing the significance of communication as a versatile tool in the arsenal of OrCom majors on their journey. The OrCom community courageously ventured through the City of OrComville, charting new paths and discovering destinations along the way.
